Nepal protesters torch Communication Minister’s residence as Gen Z-led anti-corruption unrest intensifies

Kathmandu [Nepal], September 9: Violence in Nepal escalated on Tuesday as protesters set fire to the private residence of Minister for Communication, Information and Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung in Sunakothi, Lalitpur. The incident occurred on the second day of the nationwide Gen Z-led demonstrations against corruption, The Himalayan Times reported.

According to police, the mob initially pelted stones at the minister’s house before the situation turned into arson. Authorities later confirmed that the fire was brought under control and no casualties were reported. However, the attack reflects the growing intensity of the youth-led movement sweeping across Nepal.

The protests, marked by anger over corruption and government inaction, have already claimed 19 lives across Kathmandu and other cities. In response to the unrest, authorities imposed a curfew in the capital and several other urban centres.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the developments. In an official statement, the MEA said, “We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish speedy recovery for those who were injured.” The MEA further urged restraint and called for resolution of issues through peaceful dialogue, while advising Indian nationals in Nepal to remain cautious and follow local guidelines.

The political fallout of the crisis deepened with Agriculture Minister Ram Nath Adhikari tendering his resignation on Tuesday. Aligning with the Shekhar Koirala faction of the Nepali Congress, Adhikari cited the government’s heavy-handed response as his reason for stepping down. His decision followed the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak on Monday, who accepted moral responsibility for the deaths during the protests.

As Nepal grapples with mounting unrest and growing disillusionment among its youth, calls for accountability and reform are intensifying, placing the government under unprecedented pressure.
