In a significant development on the global stage, India’s Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog,  Suman Bery, presented the country’s Third Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2025, held under the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The VNR 2025 highlights India’s transformative journey in implementing the SDGs, driven by a powerful blend of economic growth, grassroots participation, targeted government schemes, and data-driven governance.

This is India’s third VNR submission, reaffirming its continued commitment to the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The report reflects a “Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society” approach in action, led by NITI Aayog through a comprehensive and consultative process involving States, Union Territories, civil society, private sector, and development partners.

1. Poverty Reduction:
An estimated 248 million people have exited multidimensional poverty (MPI), showcasing major strides in inclusive growth.

2. Food and Nutritional Security:
Flagship schemes like PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana and POSHAN Abhiyaan have ensured access to food and better nutrition across vulnerable populations.

3. Health Coverage:
Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest health assurance scheme, continues to expand access to free, quality healthcare.

4. Clean Energy Transition:
Initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM-KUSUM, and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are accelerating India’s move to sustainable and clean energy.

5. Innovation and Startups:
India is now the 3rd largest startup ecosystem globally, boosting employment, tech innovation, and digital entrepreneurship.

6. Infrastructure Development:
Projects such as PM Gati Shakti, Make in India, and National Industrial Corridor Development Programme are modernizing India’s core infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities.

The report credits India’s globally recognized Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—built on the JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile)—as a game changer in delivering transparent, inclusive, and efficient public services.

Tools like the SDG India Index, Northeast SDG District Index, and National MPI continue to guide localised SDG implementation. Meanwhile, focused programmes like the Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) and Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP) ensure last-mile delivery of welfare schemes.

India’s VNR 2025 also underlines its leadership in South-South Cooperation, offering capacity-building and institutional support to developing nations.

Aligned with Viksit Bharat @2047, India’s long-term development strategy aims to achieve a developed nation status by its 100th year of independence. The approach is rooted in inclusion, innovation, infrastructure, and institutional reforms—laying the foundation for a self-reliant, future-ready India.
