Massive Fire Destroys Kasauli’s Heritage Market, Iconic ‘Bun-Sam’ Shop Reduced to Ashes

Early morning blaze triggers LPG cylinder explosions, wipes out century-old market shops in Himachal Pradesh

Kasauli: A devastating fire swept through the historic Kasauli Heritage Market in the early hours of Monday, destroying several shops and leaving behind massive losses in the hill town of Kasauli.

The blaze reportedly broke out around 4 am and spread rapidly across the tightly packed market area. Within minutes, flames engulfed multiple establishments, reducing at least eight shops to rubble. Thick plumes of smoke were visible from a distance as the fire intensified.

The situation worsened due to a series of LPG cylinder explosions inside the affected shops, which not only fueled the fire but also hampered firefighting efforts. Fire tenders from nearby areas, including Parwanoo and Solan, were rushed to the spot, and it took nearly five hours to bring the blaze under control.

Officials suspect a short circuit as the likely cause of the fire. According to local authorities, the flames initially started in an eatery before spreading to adjoining shops in quick succession.

Among the worst-hit establishments was the iconic Narinder Bun Samosa Shop, a well-known outlet famous for its simple yet beloved “bun-samosa” snack. The shop, considered a landmark in the area, had over the years attracted notable personalities, including Sanjay Dutt and celebrated writer Khushwant Singh.

Residents expressed shock and grief over the destruction of the century-old market, which holds deep cultural and emotional significance for the town. Many described the loss of the iconic shop as the end of an era.

While no casualties were reported, the financial damage is estimated to be around ₹3 crore. The local administration has announced immediate relief assistance for affected shopkeepers, with each receiving initial compensation.

The incident has also raised concerns among locals, who pointed to safety lapses and the dangers posed by LPG cylinders in congested market areas. Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause and assess preventive measures for the future.
