New Delhi, September 26, 2025 – The Government of India has issued a notification empowering the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to grant equivalence to Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) certificates issued by various school education boards in India. This equivalence will be valid for admissions to higher education institutions and employment under Central, State, and Union Territory governments.

The notification, published in the e-Gazette on September 6, 2025, by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, supersedes the earlier notification dated November 15, 2021, under which the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) held this responsibility.

NCERT will carry out this role through the National Assessment Centre, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), established under the provisions of the National Education Policy 2020. The mechanism ensures a robust, academically rigorous process to maintain the highest educational standards while determining equivalence.

The new system applies to Central, State, and private Indian School Boards established by Acts of Parliament or State legislatures, executive orders, or recognised statutory institutions. Certificates granted equivalence by NCERT will provide automatic inter-board parity, simplifying the transfer process for students moving between different school boards across India.

This initiative aims to ensure uniform recognition of qualifications nationwide, promoting smoother transitions for students and facilitating access to higher education and government employment opportunities.
