Bangladesh’s Chief Justice to “resign” amid hundreds of protesters storming the Supreme Court and issuing ultimatums

DHAKA : Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Obaidul Hassan, who assumed leadership of the Supreme Court last year and is widely regarded as a close ally of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is reportedly preparing to step down.

This decision follows a large-scale protest on Saturday, where hundreds of demonstrators besieged the Supreme Court in Dhaka, demanding the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice and other judges of the Appellate Division by 1 PM.

Sheikh Hasina had resigned as Prime Minister and fled the country on Monday amidst escalating nationwide protests. Justice Hassan is expected to formally submit his resignation after consulting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin later in the evening. The Chief Justice’s intent to resign was announced midday on Saturday, shortly after protesters gathered outside the court.
