“Government takes the matter seriously.” – Dr. Jaishankar regarding Indians stuck in the Russian Army

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that 91 Indian nationals had been recruited by the Russian Army. Of these, eight have tragically lost their lives, 14 have been released, and 69 remain awaiting release. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing this issue, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had secured a commitment from Russian President Vladimir Putin to facilitate the release of the remaining individuals.

While Russia maintains that these recruits entered into contracts voluntarily, evidence indicates that many were misled about the nature of their employment. The Minister also provided an update on the ongoing CBI investigation, which has resulted in criminal charges against 19 individuals and entities, with four human traffickers currently in custody.

Additionally, Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the government’s efforts to repatriate Indian nationals misled into working in Southeast Asia, with a total of 650 individuals brought back from Cambodia, 450 from Myanmar, and 548 from Laos. The government continues to monitor and address these issues vigilantly.
