All Odisha Elephant Census-2024 report reveals a marginal increase in the elephant population over the last seven years. According to the census, a total of 2,098 elephants were counted across 38 Forest Divisions in Odisha.
The breakdown of the elephant population includes 313 adult tuskers, 13 adult makhna, 748 adult females, 148 sub-adult males, 282 sub-adult females, 209 juveniles, and 385 calves. Notably, there was no presence of elephants in 13 Divisions.
Dhenkanal Forest Division reported the highest number of elephants in the state, with 239 jumbos.
The Forest Department conducted the three-day census exercise from May 22 to 24, covering areas with reported elephant movements across 48 divisions in 28 districts of the state. The census involved over 5,700 Forest Department staff, along with the participation of several NGOs, research scholars, and academicians.
