Nationwide Civil Defense Mock Drill: Blackout in Delhi, Mumbai from 8 PM Today!

Mumbai 7 may : In a major preparedness exercise, the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that a nationwide Civil Defense Mock Drill will be conducted across 244 districts today, starting from 8 PM. As part of this large-scale operation, metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai will undergo a planned blackout, with residents urged to halt outdoor activities and limit phone usage during the drill.

This coordinated effort comes under the directives issued by the Ministry to enhance the readiness of civil defense teams and test the resilience of urban and rural populations in the face of emergency scenarios, including air raids, blackouts, and cyber disruptions.

According to senior officials, the drill will simulate conditions of national emergency, focusing on community alertness, evacuation preparedness, and public cooperation. Citizens are being instructed to move to designated safe spaces, avoid unnecessary travel, and minimize non-essential communication over mobile networks to reduce network load during the exercise.

Authorities have clarified that this is purely a mock exercise and there is no cause for alarm. Speaking to the media, a Home Ministry spokesperson said, “This drill is a critical part of ensuring that our civil defense mechanisms are fully operational. We request the full cooperation of citizens so that the drill can run smoothly and offer valuable learnings.”

In Delhi, power utility providers have confirmed that certain grids will be temporarily shut down at 8 PM to simulate blackout conditions, and public announcement systems will be activated to guide residents. Police and municipal bodies will also monitor key junctions to ensure orderly movement and public safety.

Similarly, in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued advisories across neighborhoods, asking citizens to remain indoors, avoid coastline areas, and refrain from using personal vehicles unless absolutely necessary. Emergency services, hospitals, and critical infrastructure facilities will remain fully functional and unaffected by the blackout simulation.

Experts note that such drills are essential in a geopolitical climate where nations need to be prepared not only for natural disasters but also for man-made crises such as cyberattacks, cross-border tensions, or internal security threats.

Citizens across social media have shared mixed reactions. While many appreciate the government’s proactive approach to emergency preparedness, some have expressed concerns about the short notice and potential inconvenience. “It’s a small price to pay for safety,” said a Delhi resident on X (formerly Twitter). “Better to be ready than regret later.”

The Home Ministry emphasized that after the drill, a review and analysis will be conducted to identify gaps, assess public response, and fine-tune the protocols for future preparedness. Authorities urged people not to spread rumors or panic and to follow only official communication channels for updates.

This evening’s mock drill marks one of the largest coordinated civil defense exercises in recent years and reflects India’s commitment to improving national resilience against emergencies. As the clock ticks closer to 8 PM, all eyes are on how the drill unfolds across the country.
