Bihar : The Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM) Deemed University in Bihar is set to introduce a pioneering Buddhist Artificial Intelligence (AI) system with the assistance of Malaysia. This initiative aims to revive the Nalanda tradition and make Buddhist teachings more accessible through innovative technology.
NNM Deemed University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Siddharth Singh, announced that the university will roll out the ‘Nava Nalanda Mahavihara Norbu’ AI system and chatbot, developed in collaboration with Malaysian experts. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between both parties to facilitate this groundbreaking project. Professor Singh emphasized that this AI-driven initiative will provide an interactive and immersive way for students, researchers, and Buddhist scholars to engage with Lord Buddha’s teachings.
The AI system will serve as a digital repository of Buddhist scriptures, historical texts, and philosophical discussions, offering instant access to key Buddhist doctrines and interpretations. It is expected to revolutionize how Buddhist studies are pursued by integrating AI-powered learning tools, making Buddhist philosophy more comprehensible to modern learners.
Nava Nalanda Mahavihara has a long history of academic collaboration with esteemed institutions worldwide, including universities in Japan, Taiwan, the USA, Vietnam, and Thailand. Through these international partnerships, NNM continues to expand its academic and research initiatives, fostering a global understanding of Buddhist philosophy and heritage.
As a premier institution under the Union Ministry of Culture, NNM Deemed University has been actively engaged in the promotion of Buddhist studies and multiple ancient languages such as Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese. These programs aim to preserve and propagate the rich literary and cultural traditions associated with Buddhism.
Situated near the historic Nalanda University heritage site, Nava Nalanda Mahavihara plays a vital role in advancing Buddhist education, art, and culture. Its academic contributions have strengthened India’s cultural ties with various Buddhist-majority nations, reinforcing its position as a global center for Buddhist studies.
Additionally, the university is aligning itself with India’s New Education Policy (NEP) and will soon introduce undergraduate courses under this framework in the upcoming academic session. This move is expected to enhance interdisciplinary learning and create new opportunities for students interested in Buddhist philosophy and related fields.
