Bengaluru July 20 2024 : Rescue efforts are in full swing in Shirur village, Karnataka, as authorities strive to locate three individuals missing in the aftermath of a devastating landslide. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has claimed the lives of seven people so far. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to visit the site on Sunday to oversee the ongoing rescue operations.
Since the landslide struck on July 16, rescue teams have recovered seven bodies. Despite facing challenges from heavy rains, teams are utilizing advanced equipment such as ground-penetrating radar and metal detectors in their search efforts.
Superintendent of Police (Karwar) Narayana M stated, ”Rescue and search operations have resumed today. We are employing all possible means to locate the missing individuals. The entire administration is on-site, and efforts are being coordinated with the Navy.”
Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy visited the affected area on Saturday, attributing the tragedy to “unscientific practices” in the forest area and poor construction quality. He expressed condolences, particularly noting the loss of a family of five who operated a tea-selling business.
As a precautionary measure, vehicular traffic on National Highway 66 has been temporarily halted following the landslide.
