Bengaluru, Mar 15 ,2025: Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli on Saturday highlighted the pivotal role of women athletes in revolutionizing sports in India, attributing their self-motivated efforts to increased commercial expansion, enhanced funding, and the eventual launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, powered by Leaders, Kohli reflected on the evolving landscape of women’s sports. “Women athletes have been the architects of their own success, generating attention that led to financial growth, greater sponsorship, and ultimately, the establishment of the WPL,” he said.
Kohli emphasized the necessity of a unified approach toward sports development, stating that women’s sports are an essential part of the overall sports ecosystem. “Relying solely on men for sports advancement is not the way forward. A thriving sports culture must include everyone, and women’s sports are a crucial component of that,” he asserted.
“We now have extensive data in women’s sports, not just in cricket but across disciplines like tennis, badminton, wrestling, and boxing. The trajectory is promising, but it requires stronger support and continued infrastructure development,” he added.
He also pointed out how the growing achievements of female athletes have attracted more viewership, leading to greater financial backing and structural enhancements in women’s sports.
The summit, which convened leading figures from India’s sporting fraternity, focused on various aspects of sports development, with a special spotlight on the rise and future potential of women’s sports in the country.
