New Delhi– High drama unfolded in the national capital today when Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav leapt over a police barricade to continue the INDIA bloc’s protest march towards the Election Commission of India’s headquarters.
The march, led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, began from Parliament’s Makar Dwar and aimed to highlight alleged irregularities in Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and what the Opposition terms “voter fraud” during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
As Delhi Police positioned barricades to halt the march, Yadav climbed over and landed on the other side, accusing the authorities of using law enforcement to suppress dissent. “They are using the police to stop us,” he said, urging the protest to continue.
Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain claimed that officers were detaining MPs on the spot. “Over 300 MPs from both Houses are here. We are not being allowed to meet the Election Commission, and many are being taken into custody,” he alleged.
Several senior Opposition figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and NCP (SCP) chief Sharad Pawar, joined the demonstration. Protesters chanted “vote chor” slogans, demanding the poll panel address allegations of booth capturing, voter list manipulation, and misuse of government machinery.
Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav alleged widespread malpractice during recent Uttar Pradesh bypolls. “In 10 assembly constituencies, not only were votes stolen, but booths were captured. Yet the Election Commission took no action against the officials acting on state government orders,” she said.
Delhi Police maintained that no permission had been granted for the march, and security measures were in place to prevent disruption near the Election Commission’s office at Nirvachan Sadan.
