Internet access with 3G or 4G mobile connectivity is now available in more than 95 percent of villages in India

More than 95 percent of villages in India today have internet access with 3G or 4G mobile connectivity. According to data released by the Ministry of Communication, out of approximately 644,000 villages, almost 613,000 have internet access as of April this year. Additionally, out of a total of 954.4 million internet subscribers in India, more than 398.3 million are from rural areas.

The Ministry also reported that the total number of internet subscribers in the country has grown at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.26 percent over the past ten years, including growth in villages and tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Furthermore, India’s ranking in average internet download speed has significantly improved, rising from 130th place in 2014 to 16th this year, with an average download speed of 105.85 Megabits per second.

The Ministry highlighted that it is supporting various technology-led startups and innovation schemes such as TIDE 2.0, GENESIS, Centres of Excellence, and the Next Generation Incubation Scheme to further advance digital connectivity and innovation in the country.
