FM Nirmala Sitharaman has dismissed allegations of discrimination against certain states in the recently presented Union Budget

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has rejected allegations of discrimination against some states in the Union Budget. During the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha today, she responded to opposition charges, alleging that the Opposition, led by Congress, is deliberately trying to create the impression that opposition-ruled states have been ignored in the budget. She clarified that it is not feasible to name every state in the Budget speech, and this does not imply that Central Government programs are not extended to those states.

Sitharaman further added that between the vote on account and the recent Budget, the Union Cabinet has approved several development projects in Maharashtra and West Bengal. Earlier, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue, claiming the Union Budget was designed to save the government. He argued that without balanced allocation, development would suffer. Following the Minister’s response, Opposition parties staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha.

In the Lok Sabha, opposition parties also staged a walkout over the same issue. Members from Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, TMC, and others protested against the alleged discrimination, claiming that only Andhra Pradesh and Bihar received attention. Speaker Om Birla objected to the conduct of the opposition, criticizing the disruption of the House during the Question Hour. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also questioned the behavior of the opposition members.
