Supreme Court has refused to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 examination and order a re-test

The Supreme Court has refused to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 examination and order a re-test. This decision paves the way for the commencement of the counselling process for admission to undergraduate courses in government and private medical colleges across India starting today.

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated that the material on record does not indicate a systemic leak of the question paper, thereby maintaining the sanctity of the examination held on May 5. The bench, including Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, concluded that cancelling the entire NEET UG 2024 exam is not justified based on the material available and settled legal principles.

The court highlighted that ordering a fresh exam would have serious consequences for over 20 lakh students and disrupt the admission schedule. Furthermore, it would negatively impact medical education, the availability of qualified medical professionals, and be disadvantageous for marginalized groups benefiting from seat reservations.

Regarding a specific physics question, the Supreme Court has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to re-tally the NEET UG result, considering option 4 as the only correct answer.
