Hyderabad, July 19 : Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday announced a major expansion of rail infrastructure in Telangana, with a focus on doubling the train-handling capacity in the Hyderabad region. The initiative forms part of the Indian Railways’ broader vision to transform Telangana into a high-efficiency logistics and connectivity hub.
Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, the minister stated that the current operational capacity of approximately 600 trains per day in the Hyderabad-Secunderabad region would be scaled up to 1,200 trains daily in the coming years. This ambitious target has already been assigned to the South Central Railway’s General Manager, he said.
“The entire Hyderabad region—including Secunderabad and nearby stations—is undergoing capacity enhancement. This includes the major redevelopment of Secunderabad station, which is progressing rapidly,” Vaishnaw confirmed.
In a significant development, the Railways is also exploring a hub-based operational model, where multiple stations in Telangana will be configured to serve as key nodes for outbound connectivity across North, South, East, and West India. This model is expected to boost efficiency and reduce congestion at major terminals.
Vaishnaw emphasized the strategic role of the Regional Ring Road (RRR) in Telangana’s future transportation blueprint. He revealed that a proposal was placed before the Telangana Chief Minister to allocate a 30-meter corridor alongside the RRR to facilitate rail connectivity and establish Inland Container Depots (ICDs).
“These ICDs will allow seamless transportation of goods from Telangana’s manufacturing zones to key ports across India,” Vaishnaw noted, calling it a potential game changer for the state’s logistics and export ecosystem.
The minister also lauded IIT Hyderabad for its active participation in the India Semiconductor Mission. Highlighting the use of advanced design tools distributed to over 270 colleges, he said that IIT Hyderabad is among the leading institutions leveraging these tools to train students in semiconductor design and related technologies.
“This initiative is directly aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to empower youth with next-generation skills in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and electronics,” Vaishnaw added.
As Telangana continues to rise as a key industrial and technological player, Indian Railways’ robust infrastructure roadmap aims to ensure that the state remains well-connected, competitive, and prepared for the future.
