Dhanbad, Jharkhand — The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, today graced the 45th Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, lauding the institution’s academic excellence and urging students to embrace innovation that is not just intelligent but also empathetic, ethical, and environmentally sustainable.

Addressing the graduating batch and academic community, President Murmu noted that IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, established nearly a century ago, began with a focused vision to produce experts in mining and geology. Over the years, it has transformed into a premier multidisciplinary institute, contributing to the country’s technological advancement, research output, and innovation ecosystem.

“This institute has played a vital role in the technological development of our country. I am glad to see that IIT (ISM) has created an academic environment where education and innovation are aligned with people’s needs and national aspirations,” the President stated.

She emphasized the critical role such institutions play in nation-building, especially during times when the world faces complex global challenges such as climate change, depleting natural resources, digital disruption, and rising inequality. In this context, President Murmu said institutions like IIT Dhanbad must not only produce capable engineers and researchers but also compassionate, sensitive, and purposeful professionals.

Calling for an interdisciplinary approach to education, she urged higher education institutes to promote a patent culture, enhance industry-readiness, and support R&D and startup initiatives to ensure India’s global competitiveness in science and technology.

“India’s greatest strength lies in its vast human resource. Access to digital skills and technical education is paving the way for India to emerge as a technological superpower,” she added.

President Murmu also advised students to use their education as a tool for public good, not merely personal success. She encouraged them to work toward creating a Green India, where development does not come at the cost of nature but exists in harmony with it.

“Whatever you do in life, let it reflect not just your intelligence, but also your compassion, excellence, and ethics. Innovation driven by empathy — not just innovation — is what will make the world a better place,” she concluded.

The event was attended by senior faculty, alumni, students, and guests from across India, reinforcing IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s standing as a catalyst of educational transformation and socio-technical progress.
