New Delhi, May 21: Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, paid floral tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 34th death anniversary at Veer Bhumi in Delhi on Tuesday.
Several senior leaders such as Sachin Pilot and DK Shivakumar also visited the memorial site to honor the late Prime Minister, remembering his immense contribution to India’s development and modernization.
In a tribute on social media platform X, Kharge described Rajiv Gandhi as “a great son of India” and highlighted his key achievements including lowering the voting age to 18, strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions, pioneering the Telecom and IT revolution, initiating the computerisation program, and launching major social initiatives like the universal immunisation program and a new education policy focused on inclusive learning.
“Rajiv Gandhi inspired hope among millions. His visionary and courageous leadership helped prepare India for the challenges of the 21st century,” Kharge wrote.
Sachin Pilot also hailed Gandhi’s legacy, calling him a “visionary leader who provided a progressive outlook and took India to new heights.” He referred to the day as ‘Balidan Diwas’, honoring Rajiv Gandhi’s sacrifice.
The Congress party, in its official post, remembered Rajiv Gandhi as a leader whose vision for modern India remains deeply influential, especially in the areas of science, technology, and youth empowerment.
Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar shared a personal tribute, describing Rajiv Gandhi as a mentor who inspired and empowered him. “He laid the foundation for Digital India and had a special place for Karnataka in his heart,” Shivakumar said.
Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest Prime Minister in 1984 and served until 1989. He was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
