New Delhi, July 14 : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a financial assistance of INR 1 crore for former India cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, who is currently battling blood cancer at King’s College Hospital in London. The decision follows emotional appeals from Gaekwad’s former teammates, including Kapil Dev and Sandeep Patil.
“Mr. Jay Shah has instructed the BCCI to release ₹1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to India’s veteran cricketer Mr. Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling cancer,” stated the BCCI apex council in a statement.
The condition of the 71-year-old Gaekwad, son of former India captain D.K. Gaekwad, was highlighted earlier this month by Sandeep Patil. Patil revealed that Gaekwad had personally informed him of the need for financial assistance. Subsequently, former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar contacted BCCI treasurer Ashish Selar, and Kapil Dev appealed for support.
Kapil Dev, alongside other former cricketers like Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad, has been working to arrange funds for Gaekwad’s treatment.
Jay Shah has also spoken to Gaekwad’s family to assess the situation and offer support. The BCCI’s statement emphasized that the board stands by Gaekwad’s family during this crisis and will continue to monitor his progress, expressing confidence in his recovery.
Anshuman Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India between 1975 and 1987, scoring 1,985 runs in Test cricket with two centuries and ten fifties, and 269 runs in the ODI format.
