New Delhi : Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has emphasized that education as a service holds immense potential to enhance India’s export earnings while simultaneously positioning the country as a global hub for high-quality learning.
Speaking about the growing importance of knowledge-based services in the global economy, the minister noted that India’s strong academic institutions, skilled faculty and expanding digital infrastructure create a unique opportunity to deliver world-class education to students across the globe. According to him, education exports can become a major contributor to the country’s services sector in the coming years.
Goyal highlighted that India already has a rich tradition of learning and scholarship, and the time has come to translate this legacy into a modern global educational ecosystem. By offering courses, training programmes and academic collaborations to international students, India can strengthen both its economic and cultural engagement with the world.
The minister pointed out that the concept of “education as a service” extends beyond physical campuses and includes digital learning platforms, international student mobility, research collaborations and professional training programmes. With the rapid growth of online education and cross-border learning, Indian institutions have an opportunity to reach students in multiple countries without geographical limitations.
He also stressed that strengthening the global presence of Indian educational institutions will help create new opportunities for students, researchers and faculty members. By expanding international partnerships, universities can promote innovation, knowledge exchange and global academic standards while attracting students from different parts of the world.
According to Goyal, the initiative aligns with the broader economic vision of the Government of India to diversify and expand the country’s service exports. Alongside sectors such as information technology and professional services, education can emerge as a powerful pillar of India’s global economic engagement.
The minister further noted that India’s demographic advantage and expanding higher education network provide a strong foundation for this transformation. By improving infrastructure, enhancing quality standards and encouraging international collaborations, Indian institutions can build a strong global reputation in education.
Shri Goyal reiterated that exporting educational services is not only an economic opportunity but also a way to showcase India’s intellectual and cultural strengths. As more international students engage with Indian universities and learning platforms, the country can strengthen its global academic influence and foster deeper people-to-people connections.
With sustained policy support and institutional innovation, education as a service has the potential to significantly increase India’s export revenues while enabling high-quality Indian education to reach learners across the world.
