Air India Flight Returns to Delhi After Mid-Air Technical Concern

New Delhi, 26 March 2026 – A London-bound flight operated by Air India was forced to return to the national capital on Thursday after a suspected technical issue was detected mid-flight, prompting a precautionary diversion in line with safety protocols.

The flight, AI 111, had departed from Delhi early in the morning and was headed towards London’s Heathrow Airport when the crew decided to turn back. The aircraft remained airborne for several hours before safely landing back in Delhi around midday.

According to airline officials, the decision to return was taken as a preventive measure after indications of a possible technical snag emerged during the journey. The aircraft was reportedly in international airspace when the diversion call was made.

An official spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and is now undergoing a thorough technical inspection to identify and address the issue. The airline stressed that passenger safety remains its top priority and that all standard procedures were followed.

Sources indicated that the aircraft had been flying for several hours before the turnaround decision, with the total flight duration extending to nearly seven hours before it returned to its origin.

Passengers onboard were informed about the situation, and arrangements are being made to ensure they can continue their journey to London at the earliest possible time. The airline also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused due to the unexpected disruption.

Notably, the aircraft involved belongs to Air India’s Airbus A350 fleet, which the airline began operating in 2024 as part of its fleet modernisation efforts.

This incident comes amid increased scrutiny of flight safety and operational reliability, with airlines taking extra precautions to address even minor technical concerns during long-haul journeys.

Authorities and airline engineers are currently conducting detailed evaluations, and further updates are expected once the inspection process is completed.
