Ahmedabad, June 12: In what can only be described as a miraculous escape, a British national has emerged as the sole survivor of the tragic Air India AI 171 crash that took place in Ahmedabad earlier today. The aircraft, bound for London, had 242 people on board, including passengers and crew. So far, 241 fatalities have been confirmed, making this one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in India’s recent history.
The survivor has been identified as Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen who was visiting Gujarat and was en route back to London. According to officials, Ramesh was found alive in Seat 11A, and was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical staff report that he is critically injured but stable, and currently under close observation.
Authorities say the plane crashed into a residential area in Meghani Nagar, shortly after takeoff, causing significant structural damage and civilian casualties on the ground. Emergency teams arrived on the scene to manage fires, rescue efforts, and recovery of remains.
Recalling his harrowing experience, Ramesh said, “There were bodies all around me, there were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance.” His testimony highlights the unimaginable destruction and chaos following the crash.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed the survivor’s identity and said that the search and rescue teams found him during the debris scan. “One survivor has been found and is undergoing treatment. The number of deaths is likely to rise as the crash also impacted densely populated residential structures,” he added.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest possible mechanical failure or bird strike, but officials are awaiting data from the black box and cockpit voice recorder.
