AIIMS Begins Major Study on Air Pollution and Rising Lung Cancer Cases

New initiative aims to examine environmental risks and strengthen early detection and prevention strategies

New Delhi, March 21: All India Institute of Medical Sciences has launched a comprehensive research initiative to investigate the connection between air pollution and the increasing incidence of lung cancer in the country.

The study will focus on understanding how prolonged exposure to polluted air contributes to respiratory diseases, particularly among non-smokers who are increasingly being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Researchers plan to analyse patient data, environmental exposure patterns, and clinical outcomes to establish clearer links between air quality and cancer risk.

The initiative is expected to include collaboration with multiple departments, combining expertise in oncology, pulmonology, and  environmental health to generate a holistic understanding of the issue.

Doctors involved in the project highlighted that air pollution has emerged as a significant public health concern, especially in urban areas where poor air quality is persistent.

The research will also aim to identify high-risk groups and develop strategies for early detection, which could improve treatment outcomes and reduce mortality rates.Officials noted that findings from the study may contribute to policy recommendations and strengthen efforts to control pollution levels across cities.

The initiative comes amid growing global evidence linking fine particulate matter to serious health conditions, including various forms of cancer.Experts believe that such studies are crucial for shaping long-term healthcare planning and raising awareness about the health impacts of environmental factors.

The project is expected to provide valuable insights that could guide both medical research and public health interventions in the years ahead.
