The world is currently on a trajectory to experience a 2.7°C increase in global temperatures by the end of the century, according to a recent report by the United Nations. This path is considered “catastrophic” by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who emphasized the urgent need for stronger climate action and cooperation from all countries, particularly the G20 nations which are responsible for around 80% of global emissions.
The UN report highlights that current national pledges under the Paris Agreement are insufficient, with a projected 16% increase in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2010 levels. This increase is far from the reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to well below 2°C, ideally 1.5°C
