Pakistan targeted our military assets, and India retaliated with matching force and precision, striking in the same domain with equal intensity, officials confirmed.

New Delhi, May 8 — Indicating that Islamabad was pushing tensions higher, India on Thursday stated that Pakistan had “attempted to strike several military targets” across India late last night, leading to a swift Indian counterattack “in the same domain with equal intensity,” specifically targeting Pakistan’s Air Defence Radars and systems.

According to the Defence Ministry, Pakistan not only aimed at India’s military infrastructure at 15 locations but also “stepped up” its unprovoked cross-border shelling using mortars and heavy artillery along the Line of Control (LoC) in sectors like Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir. Tragically, this resulted in the deaths of 16 civilians, including three women and five children.

“In response, India was left with no choice but to retaliate and silence Pakistan’s mortar and artillery fire,” the ministry said in its official statement.

Referencing the press briefing on Operation SINDOOR held yesterday, the ministry reiterated that India’s strikes in response to the Pahalgam terror attack had been “focused, measured, and non-escalatory.” That operation had involved targeted aerial assaults on nine major terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), including in Muridke, Bahawalpur, and Sialkot in Punjab, as well as Muzaffarabad and Kotli in PoJK.

The ministry reminded that “it was explicitly stated that no Pakistani military installations had been targeted” and warned that “any attack on military assets within India would receive a fitting reply.”

However, last night, “Pakistan launched attempts to strike several military bases in northern and western India, including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles,” the statement said.

India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and air defence systems successfully intercepted these attacks. Debris from the downed drones and missiles is now being recovered, providing clear evidence of the Pakistani strikes.

“This morning, Indian Armed Forces carried out strikes on Pakistani Air Defence Radars and systems at multiple locations. Reports confirm that an air defence installation in Lahore has been taken out,” the ministry noted.

Emphasizing that India’s actions mirrored Pakistan’s “in the same domain and with equivalent force,” the Defence Ministry underscored that the Indian Armed Forces remain committed to avoiding escalation — but only as long as the Pakistani military respects that position.
