Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that he is working on implementing U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to remove and resettle Gaza’s population, calling it the “only way to secure the region’s future.” Netanyahu’s comments came during a meeting in Jerusalem with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had just begun his Middle East visit.
Rubio, a vocal supporter of Israel’s actions, reiterated that the primary objective in Gaza must be the eradication of Hamas.
While Netanyahu emphasized that any relocation of Gaza’s population would be voluntary, critics have raised concerns that the widespread destruction in Gaza leaves its residents with little choice but to leave. Rubio, who will also visit Saudi Arabia and the UAE, is expected to face opposition from these countries. Both have expressed strong disapproval of Trump’s proposal, which envisions redeveloping Gaza under U.S. control.
Mr. Netanyahu and President Trump have consistently aligned on their strategy for Gaza. Netanyahu echoed Trump’s sentiments, warning that if Hamas fails to release the remaining hostages, Israel would unleash “the gates of hell.” This statement is part of Israel’s broader strategy to deal with Hamas and assert control over Gaza.
The second phase of ceasefire talks, which would address the release of hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, has not yet begun. However, Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, indicated that talks will start soon. The primary aim of these negotiations will be to secure the release of 19 Israeli soldiers currently held by Hamas.
The situation remains highly complex, with deep divisions between Israel, the U.S., and regional powers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which are wary of U.S. involvement in Gaza. These negotiations and the ongoing conflict continue to shape the broader geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East.
