Chennai— Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie has officially received an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), sending ripples of excitement and surprise across fan circles. The action-packed entertainer, helmed by acclaimed director Lokesh Kanagaraj, is slated to hit theatres on August 14, just ahead of the Independence Day weekend.
This development marks a rare move for a Rajinikanth film in recent years, as most of his projects typically carry a U or U/A rating, allowing audiences of all age groups to enjoy his iconic performances. Coolie, however, appears to chart a different path — one laced with intense action and bold themes.
According to industry sources and a statement from the producers Sun Pictures, the A certificate stems from the film’s gritty and realistic portrayal of violence, potentially strong language, and mature themes. Notably, this is Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first film to receive an A rating — his previous hits like Vikram and Leo were certified U/A.
In a past interview, Lokesh had made it clear that he wouldn’t dilute the film’s intensity for wider certification:
“I didn’t want to compromise the tone of the film. There are guns, drugs, and raw emotions — this is the Rajini film with the adrenaline rush you’ve never seen before,” he said.
The unexpected certification has sparked a flurry of reactions online. One fan posted, “A-rated Coolie? Did not see that coming! Looks like Lokesh sir is going all in.” Another commented, “I grew up watching Rajini sir with my whole family. This is a surprise, but I’m excited for a bold new chapter.”
Others pointed to the director’s creative philosophy as a reason to look forward to something groundbreaking. “No compromises, just raw action and storytelling — that’s what Lokesh promised, and that’s what we’re getting,” one user wrote on X.
While Rajinikanth has appeared in a handful of A-certified films in his early career, such as Pudukkavidhai and Naan Sigappu Manithan, Coolie is his first adult-only film in decades. This adds a unique element to its already high anticipation.
Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, Coolie boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, and others. The film will also go head-to-head at the box office with Ayan Mukerji’s War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.
Will ‘Coolie’ redefine Rajinikanth’s legacy with this bold cinematic leap? Fans won’t have to wait long to find out. The film hits theatres on August 14.
