New Delhi, October 14, 2026: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday criticised the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over its protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, questioning the group’s focus on Delhi and alleging that its demonstrations were driven by political considerations.
Addressing a press conference, Gupta questioned the objections raised against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, stating that similar revisions had been conducted previously, irrespective of which party was in power at the state or central level.
“Why were there no voices raised against it earlier? Why are such objections being raised now?” she asked.
The Chief Minister questioned whether CJP would raise similar objections if the exercise were conducted in states such as Tamil Nadu or Kerala, where the political circumstances differ from those in Delhi.
“You want to oppose the system functioning in a democracy simply because you have failed to form the government,” Gupta said, challenging the group to explain whether its concerns extended to states beyond the national capital.
She also alleged that the protests had caused Delhi losses worth thousands of crores of rupees, attributing the disruption to ongoing demonstrations and sit-ins.
Gupta further accused CJP of functioning as the Aam Aadmi Party’s “B-team”, claiming that the group was pursuing a political agenda associated with the party. These remarks reflect the Chief Minister’s allegations; CJP’s response was not included in the report.
Gupta’s comments came after CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to five-day judicial custody in connection with an alleged breach of restrictions at Jantar Mantar, which had been de-notified as a designated protest site earlier in the week.
The protests were directed against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the electoral revision exercise.
The issue has also drawn reactions from opposition leaders. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi previously backed CJP following the detention of Das and Ranka, arguing that waving the national flag at Jantar Mantar was not a crime.
Gupta also criticised the Congress, alleging that the party was associating with people abroad whom she accused of being hostile to India.
She said the country was progressing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and alleged that opposition groups were attempting to undermine that progress.
The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges over the CJP protests, the Special Intensive Revision exercise and the detention of the group’s leaders. The dispute has brought questions about electoral processes, the right to protest and the enforcement of restrictions at designated demonstration sites into sharper focus.
