Kanpur, August 24, 2026; IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has announced an additional contribution of ₹300 crore to support the expansion of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at the institute.
The latest commitment takes Gangwal’s total contribution towards the school to ₹400 crore, following his earlier donation of ₹100 crore in 2022. The new funding is aimed at accelerating the development of the medical school and strengthening its work in healthcare education, research and technology-driven innovation.
As part of the new commitment, Gangwal will also offer matching grants of up to ₹300 crore against contributions received from other donors. The initiative is intended to encourage alumni, philanthropists and other supporters to participate in IIT Kanpur’s plans for building an interdisciplinary healthcare ecosystem.
The institute’s long-term infrastructure plans include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on its campus and a proposed 200-bed cancer care and research facility. These centres are expected to create a platform where medical professionals, scientists, engineers and technology specialists can collaborate on healthcare challenges.
IIT Kanpur Director Prof Manindra Agrawal said the institute’s decision to establish a medical school was driven by the potential of combining engineering and medical sciences to develop new approaches to healthcare. He expressed appreciation for Gangwal’s continued support, saying the latest contribution would help accelerate the institution’s vision.
Prof Anil K Lalwani, Dean of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, described the contribution as a major boost to the school’s ambition of bringing medicine, technology and innovation together for wider societal benefit.
Gangwal said he considered it an honour to be associated with the development of the new medical institution and its innovative approach.
The Gangwal School is designed to build on IIT Kanpur’s expertise in science, engineering and technology while expanding into medical education, clinical research, futuristic healthcare and MedTech. The institution aims to develop academic and research programmes that can translate technological advances into practical healthcare solutions.
Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur is an Institute of National Importance and has emerged as a major centre for scientific research, engineering education and interdisciplinary innovation.
