President Murmu mourns Lakhisarai stampede deaths, prays for injured

New Delhi, August 17, 2026; President Droupadi Murmu on Monday expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in a stampede at the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district and conveyed her condolences to the families of those who died.

The President said the incident was deeply distressing and extended sympathies to the bereaved families. She also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the incident.

The stampede took place at the temple during the third Monday of the Sawan month, when a large number of devotees had gathered to worship Lord Shiva and perform Jalabhishek. The heavy rush of pilgrims stretched towards Ashok Dham Halt, where two trains had reportedly halted.

According to preliminary information, an electric pole near the queue of male devotees collapsed, triggering confusion among the pilgrims. A rumour that a live electric wire had fallen on the crowd reportedly caused panic. The resulting commotion created a sudden rush in the adjoining queue of women devotees, leading to several people falling.

The incident unfolded within a short period, with authorities responding to the situation immediately. Police and district administration teams had already been deployed at the site from the early hours of the morning, while ambulances and other emergency arrangements were available nearby.

The injured were taken to Lakhisarai Sadar Hospital and other medical facilities for treatment. At least seven people have been reported dead, while more than a dozen others sustained injuries.

Officials are assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident and verifying the latest details regarding casualties and those undergoing treatment.
