Mumbai, August 15, 2026; Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has shared a fascinating story about the enduring global popularity of his iconic film ‘Sholay’, recalling how nearly 2,000 people in Italy stayed up until 3 am to watch its restored version.
Bachchan spoke about the memorable screening while interacting with Dr Ganesh Baraiya on the latest episode of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 18’. Recalling the restoration of the 1975 Hindi classic, the veteran actor said the restored film was taken to Bologna in Italy by the Film Heritage Foundation.
Describing the screening, Bachchan said around 2,000 Italian viewers gathered at a large open venue in Bologna. The audience began watching the film at around 11 pm and remained there until nearly 3 am.
The actor’s account highlighted the remarkable connection ‘Sholay’ continues to enjoy with audiences outside India, even five decades after its original release.
Released in 1975, ‘Sholay’ is widely regarded as one of the landmark films of Hindi cinema. The film featured Bachchan alongside Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Amjad Khan and Sanjeev Kumar.
The film also included several memorable supporting performances, with actors such as A.K. Hangal, Satyen Kappu, Mac Mohan, Sachin, Jagdeep, Asrani, Viju Khote, Keshto Mukherjee and Helen contributing to its enduring legacy.
The restored version was prepared by the Film Heritage Foundation as part of efforts to preserve and showcase important Indian films for future generations.
Bachchan’s recollection of the Bologna screening once again underlined how ‘Sholay’ has transcended language and geographical boundaries, continuing to attract audiences decades after its theatrical release.
