New Delhi, April 22, 2026: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman strongly criticised the Congress party over recent remarks made by its president Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing the party of repeatedly using inappropriate language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The reaction came after a political row erupted over Kharge’s comments, which were widely perceived as offensive and triggered sharp responses from the ruling party. Sitharaman termed the remarks unacceptable and said such statements reflect a decline in the standard of political discourse.
She alleged that this was not an isolated instance and claimed that the Congress leadership has on multiple occasions resorted to personal attacks against the Prime Minister. According to her, such language undermines democratic debate and distracts from substantive policy discussions.
The controversy intensified as Kharge later issued a clarification, stating that his comments had been misinterpreted and denying that he directly used the term attributed to him. However, the exchange has further escalated tensions between the two political sides amid an already charged environment.
Sitharaman reiterated that political disagreements should remain within the bounds of dignity and urged opposition leaders to maintain decorum while expressing criticism.
