New Delhi, April 2, 2026: Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala has successfully manufactured its first 16 coach Vande Bharat Express Chair Car rake, marking its entry into the league of production units building the country’s flagship semi high speed trains.
The newly rolled out trainset is equipped with an advanced propulsion system developed by Alstom. It will now undergo oscillation trials, a critical phase to assess ride comfort, safety benchmarks and dynamic stability before being cleared for passenger operations.
This development reflects the steady progress of Indian Railways in expanding its manufacturing base and enhancing capabilities in modern train production. The move is aligned with the broader vision of delivering faster, safer and more comfortable travel experiences to passengers.
The Vande Bharat programme itself represents a major technological advancement in India’s railway sector. Originally conceptualised and developed by the Integral Coach Factory under the Make in India initiative, the trainsets have showcased India’s growing expertise in design, engineering and large scale production of high speed rolling stock.
Designed with passenger comfort in mind, the train features reclining seats with improved leg space, large windows for better visibility, fully air conditioned coaches and modern onboard systems. Additional features such as automatic doors, bio vacuum toilets and enhanced suspension technology ensure a smoother and quieter journey.
Since its introduction in 2018, the Vande Bharat initiative has expanded rapidly, with nearly a hundred Chair Car variants already produced, all initially manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, before the inclusion of new production units like Kapurthala.
