India and Indonesia Deepen Cooperation in Official Statistics

Bilateral Meeting Highlights Collaboration in Statistical Methods, AI Integration, and Sustainable Development Data

New Delhi, July 17, 2025 – In a significant step towards strengthening statistical cooperation, India and Indonesia held a bilateral meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in official statistics. The meeting, hosted by India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), witnessed the participation of senior officials from both nations, including representatives from Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

During the discussions, both sides emphasized the importance of reliable, transparent, and harmonized statistical systems to support policy formulation and sustainable development goals. Topics on the agenda included improving national accounts methodologies, adopting artificial intelligence in statistical processes, enhancing data sharing mechanisms, and exploring joint research initiatives.

India showcased its progress in using AI and digital tools for data collection and processing, particularly in areas such as price indices and employment statistics. Indonesia, in turn, shared its experience in community-based data generation and its strides toward implementing the System of National Accounts 2008 (SNA 2008) framework.

The two sides agreed to consider setting up a joint working group to oversee future collaboration, capacity building programs, and technical exchanges between the countries’ statistical agencies.

MoSPI Secretary Dr. G. P. Samanta remarked, “This engagement reaffirms our commitment to evidence-based policymaking. Through greater collaboration with Indonesia, we aim to strengthen our statistical systems to meet the evolving demands of governance and development.”

The meeting concluded with a shared vision to build resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking statistical ecosystems that can address global challenges through data-driven strategies.
