Delhi Faces Severe Flooding and Massive Traffic Jams After Overnight Rain

New Delhi : Delhi experienced significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions following heavy rainfall overnight. The downpour, which resulted in a substantial accumulation of water on several key roads and areas, significantly impacted the city’s normal functioning. Key roads like the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Parade Road Underpass in the Cantonment area, and several parts of Dhaula Kuan were heavily waterlogged, contributing to the massive traffic jams that were witnessed across the capital.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the minimum temperature this morning was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees below the average for this time of year. This drop in temperature was accompanied by a high humidity level of 100 percent, recorded at 8:30 am. The Safdarjung Observatory, which is the primary weather station for Delhi, reported 77.1 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am. This amount of rainfall is significant and has led to waterlogging in multiple areas, causing disruptions in the daily commute for many residents.

The city’s drainage system, already strained by the incessant rains of the past few weeks, struggled to cope with the volume of water. Many commuters found themselves stranded in traffic for hours, as vehicles moved at a snail’s pace due to submerged roads. Emergency services and municipal workers were seen working tirelessly to clear the waterlogged areas and manage the traffic flow.

Local authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the water recedes and the situation stabilizes. They have also issued warnings to avoid certain flooded routes and underpasses that are prone to severe waterlogging. Public transportation, including buses, was also delayed, with several routes being either diverted or completely halted to avoid the worst-affected areas.
