Eminent agriculturist and Padma Shri awardee Kamala Pujari passed away at the age of 74 in Cuttack, Odisha, following a heart attack. Admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital due to various age-related ailments, she was born in Patraput village, Koraput district. Honored with the Padma Shri in 2019, she was globally recognized for her contributions to organic farming and the preservation of indigenous paddy varieties. She preserved over 100 paddy varieties, as well as types of turmeric and cumin, and traveled to teach farmers, especially women, about organic farming practices.
