18 Killed, 19 Injured in Bus-Tanker Collision in Unnao

Unnao (UP), July 10 2024 : In a tragic accident on Wednesday morning, 18 people lost their lives, and 19 others were injured when a double-decker bus collided with a tanker in the Behta Mujawar area of Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh.

District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi reported that the collision occurred around 5:15 am on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. The private bus, en route to Delhi, crashed into a milk tanker. The speed of the bus is initially believed to be the cause of the accident, although an investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have both expressed their condolences. The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). In his message, PM Modi conveyed his sorrow and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, stating that the local administration is providing all possible assistance to the victims under the state government’s supervision.

CM Yogi Adityanath also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering his condolences to the bereaved families. He directed district officials to expedite relief efforts and prayed for the souls of the deceased and the recovery of the injured.

Police sources indicated that the accident occurred at kilometre number 247 on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway when the Delhi-bound bus from Bihar attempted to overtake the tanker. Both vehicles overturned after the collision, killing 18 people, including the drivers, on the spot.

Two of the deceased have been identified as Deepak Kumar (27) and Shiv Dayal (28), both from Sheohar in Bihar. Circle Officer (CO) Bangarmai Arvind Kumar stated that the collision happened near Jogikot village, and rescue operations commenced promptly with the help of police and UPEIDA teams. Passengers trapped in the bus were taken to the community health centre and then referred to the district hospital.

An injured passenger reported that about 60 people were on the bus at the time of the incident. District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi and Superintendent of Police Siddharth Shankar Meena arranged for those seriously injured, including Gul Mohammad, Rajdev, Santish, Shamim, and Rajnish, to be sent to a trauma centre in Lucknow, while Lal Bau was transferred to a trauma centre in Kanpur. Twenty passengers with minor injuries were given first aid and sent on to Delhi.
