New Delhi : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a dual weather alert as contrasting weather patterns grip the country. While several western and central states are expected to reel under intense heatwave conditions over the coming days, the eastern and northeastern regions are likely to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
According to the IMD, isolated pockets of Rajasthan and Gujarat are likely to face heatwave conditions for the next 2–3 days. Similar temperature spikes are also expected across parts of Punjab, Haryana, and West Madhya Pradesh over the next three days. The extreme heat is being attributed to prevailing dry northwesterly winds and clear skies, which are contributing to rapid heating of the region.
Additionally, hot and humid conditions are predicted over Kerala and Mahe on Monday. The combination of rising temperatures and elevated moisture levels is likely to cause discomfort, especially during daytime hours.
In stark contrast, the eastern coast and the northeastern states are forecasted to receive significant rainfall activity. The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall over Odisha till Tuesday. The ongoing spell is expected to provide relief from the heat and support the pre-monsoon buildup in the region.
Moreover, the meteorological department has projected scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall across Northeast and East India over the next five days. The showers will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds — raising the risk of localized damage to crops, infrastructure, and power lines.
“Thunderstorm activity is expected to increase over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. People in vulnerable areas are advised to stay indoors during lightning events,” the IMD bulletin stated.
The department has urged state authorities to remain on alert, especially in regions where severe weather could impact normal life or transportation. Farmers in rain-affected regions have been advised to secure harvested crops and plan agricultural operations accordingly.
With the pre-monsoon season intensifying, the IMD has also recommended citizens stay updated with daily weather advisories and take precautionary measures to deal with both heat-related ailments and storm-related hazards.
