Punjab : To promote tourism and wildlife conservation in Punjab, the state government has announced plans to develop the Jhajjar-Bachauli Wildlife Sanctuary in Sri Anandpur Sahib into an eco-tourism hub and Punjab’s first-ever leopard safari. This initiative was highlighted in the budget for the financial year 2025-26, presented yesterday, emphasizing the government’s focus on enhancing tourism and environmental preservation in the state.
Located near the Sutlej River, the Jhajjar-Bachauli Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, and various bird species. The leopard safari project aims to create a controlled yet natural habitat where visitors can observe leopards in their native surroundings, thus boosting tourism while ensuring wildlife protection. The initiative is expected to attract nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers, thereby increasing eco-tourism potential in the region.
Apart from the leopard safari, the Punjab government has also proposed significant investment in developing Nangal as a major tourist destination. Nangal, known for the Bhakra-Nangal Dam and its scenic beauty, will receive Rs. 10 crore for tourism-related infrastructure and facilities. The project includes improved road connectivity, eco-lodges, boating activities, and nature trails, making it a preferred destination for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation.
The government’s decision aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen tourism and provide economic opportunities to local communities. Officials believe that the leopard safari and the Nangal tourism development project will create employment in hospitality, transportation, and local handicrafts while fostering awareness about wildlife conservation.
Moreover, experts see the move as a step toward sustainable tourism, where conservation efforts go hand in hand with economic growth. Proper training and guidelines will be provided to ensure that human activity does not disrupt the sanctuary’s ecosystem. Officials have assured that all measures will be taken to maintain the ecological balance while providing visitors with an enriching wildlife experience.
With these initiatives, Punjab aims to position itself as a prominent eco-tourism hub, attracting visitors from across India. The government has promised further investments in the sector, focusing on sustainable development, better infrastructure, and responsible tourism.
