Tragic Cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh Claims 50 Lives; Heavy Rainfall to Persist in Kerala

Search and Rescue Operations Underway as IMD Issues Warnings Across Multiple States

Shimla, August 3 2024 : Himachal Pradesh is grappling with the aftermath of devastating cloudburst incidents, with state minister Vikramaditya Singh reporting that approximately 50 people are feared dead. The final toll will be confirmed following the completion of search and rescue operations. The state government has prioritized recovering bodies and restoring connectivity to the affected areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh until August 7. In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a relief package of ₹50,000 for each affected family.

In addition to Himachal Pradesh, the IMD has issued a red alert for several regions including Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, and Meghalaya for August 3, 2024. The department has also predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, and Meghalaya.

The forecast includes thunderstorms with lightning for isolated areas in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar. In Maharashtra, a red alert is in effect for Satara district on August 3 and 4, with extremely heavy rain expected in Palghar and Pune districts on August 4. Very heavy rainfall is also anticipated in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions on August 3 and 4.

For Kerala, which is still recovering from the devastating Wayanad landslide that claimed over 300 lives, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated locations through August 5. The state is experiencing widespread rainfall, with similar patterns expected over Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and Mahe. Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions can also expect isolated to scattered rainfall during this period.

Over the past 24 hours, regions including Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Gujarat, and Madhya Maharashtra have experienced very heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall has also been reported in Kerala, Punjab, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Saurashtra, Kutch, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Konkan, Goa, Bihar, Odisha, North Interior Karnataka, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura.
