Mumbai July 26 2024 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Maharashtra, particularly in Thane, Pune, Raigad, Mumbai, and Palghar, warning of heavy rainfall until 8:30 am. This has led to school closures in Palghar, Thane, and Raigad, while schools in Mumbai will remain open, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Indian Army are on standby for potential airlift operations in Pune, where at least 160 people stranded in low-lying areas have been rescued by the fire brigade.
The intense rainfall on July 25 resulted in at least four fatalities in Pune, along with a landslide on the Pune-Raigad road, where one person has died, and another is feared trapped. In Thane, two people drowned due to the overflowing Barvi Dam, with several others injured.
The state has experienced multiple incidents of short circuits, falling trees, property damage, and rising river levels. All seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai overflowed after heavy overnight rains. A landslide on the Pune-Raigad road caused significant traffic disruption, while traffic jams were also reported within Pune city.
Local train services faced delays of 10-15 minutes, and the Panvel Chouk line was suspended and rerouted to Kalyan. BEST buses in Mumbai had to be redirected due to severe flooding.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents to stay indoors whenever possible to ensure their safety.
