In Telangana, the unique Project Swasthya Nagaram for creating TB-Free Municipalities was launched yesterday. This project, a collaborative effort involving the State Tuberculosis Cell, Municipal Corporations of Peerzadiguda, Boduppal, and Pocharam in Medchal Malkajgiri district, the Central TB Division, WHO India, USAID, and others, aims to achieve TB-free municipalities.
The innovative approach will demonstrate how to end TB in urban settings where social determinants significantly impact the TB burden. It includes surveillance, prevention, and a comprehensive quality TB care model with the engagement of multiple stakeholders.
Over the next three years, the model will be implemented in Peerzadiguda, Boduppal, and Pocharam Municipal Corporations, with goals to reduce TB incidence by one-third and decrease TB-related mortality. RV Karnan, Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare and Managing Director of the National Health Mission, formally launched the project. Dr. Jyoti Jaju, Union Programme Director, highlighted that the program represents a significant step toward combating TB and enhancing community well-being by providing free medical care and counseling to patients and their families.
