New Delhi, June 16, 2025 – As Team India gears up for its high-stakes Test series against England, newly appointed captain Shubman Gill opened up about the contrasting coaching styles of Gautam Gambhir, India’s current head coach, and Ashish Nehra, his former mentor at Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
In an exclusive interview with Dinesh Karthik for Sky Cricket, Gill highlighted how both coaches have shaped his approach to leadership and performance. “Ashu pa (Nehra) is very hands-on and animated — always expressive in his approach, both in body language and communication,” Gill shared.
In contrast, he described Gambhir as “very determined, deeply committed, and crystal clear in his communication. He focuses a lot on the attitude and mindset required from the team.”
Despite their differing methods, Gill believes both coaches are striving toward the same goal — team success. “The paths might be different,” he noted, “but the destination remains the same.”
With his first Test as captain just days away at Headingley, Leeds, Gill faces immense pressure. However, having the guidance of two vastly experienced cricketing minds — one strategic and composed (Gambhir), the other involved and spirited (Nehra) — may provide him with a unique edge.
As the Gambhir-Gill partnership begins its Test chapter, all eyes will be on how this dynamic shapes India’s overseas fortunes this summer.
