Colombo, Feb 14 , 2025: Kusal Mendis’ stunning century and Dunith Wellalage’s brilliant four-wicket haul guided Sri Lanka to a commanding 174-run victory over Australia in the first ODI on Friday.
Sri Lanka, opting to bat first, posted an impressive total of 281/4 in their 50 overs. Mendis was the star of the innings, scoring a brilliant 101 off 115 balls, including 11 boundaries. Skipper Charith Asalanka also contributed with a solid 51 off 70 balls.
In response, Australia struggled to chase the target as Asitha Fernando (3/23) ripped through their top order. The Sri Lankan spinners then tightened the grip, dismissing the visitors for just 107 runs in 24.2 overs. Wellalage was the standout bowler with 4/29, and Wanindu Hasaranga supported him with three wickets.
Despite an early loss of Pathum Nissanka (6), Mendis and Madushka built a crucial partnership, gradually accelerating in the middle overs. Mendis, in superb form, powered his way to a century. Asalanka played a steady captain’s knock, and late hitting by Janith Liyanage, who scored 32 off 21 balls, ensured Sri Lanka posted a competitive total.
Australia’s chase never gained momentum as Fernando wreaked havoc with the new ball, removing three key batsmen in the powerplay. Smith fought hard to rebuild, but Sri Lanka’s spinners dominated, with Wellalage’s four-wicket haul effectively sealing the win for the hosts.
Sri Lanka’s clinical performance will give them immense confidence, while Australia will need to regroup ahead of the Champions Trophy.
