India Narrowly Loses in World Junior Squash Championships Quarterfinals

Chennai, July 22,2024 : The Indian boys and girls teams narrowly missed out in the quarterfinals of the World Junior Squash Championships Team competition held in Houston, US on Sunday night.

In a closely contested match, the sixth-seeded Indian boys team fell 1-2 to fourth-seeded South Korea. Yuvraj Wadhwani gave India an early lead with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Seojin Oh. However, Shaurya Bawa, who recently secured an individual bronze, succumbed to individual silver medallist Joo Young Na in four closely fought games. In the deciding match, Kun Kim of South Korea proved too strong for Arihant KS.

Similarly, the Indian girls team also lost by an identical margin of 1-2 to third-seeded Malaysia. Anahat Singh secured a crucial win for India with a resilient 3-2 victory against Thanusaa Uthrian after Shameena Riaz faced defeat against Whitney Wilson. In the decisive match, Nirupama Dubey fought valiantly but eventually lost in a five-game battle against Doyce Ye San Lee.

India’s Results in Quarterfinals:

Boys: India lost to South Korea 1-2

  • Yuvraj Wadhwani bt Seojin Oh 11-7, 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6
  • Shaurya Bawa lost to Joo Young Na 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 6-11
  • Arihant KS lost to Kun Kim 7-11, 6-11, 9-11

Girls: India lost to Malaysia 1-2

  • Shameena Riaz lost to Whitney Wilson 7-11, 3-11, 10-12
  • Anahat Singh bt Thanusaa Uthrian 6-11, 15-13, 11-6, 5-11, 11-6
  • Nirupama Dubey lost to Doyce Ye San Lee 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 3-11

Despite the defeats, both Indian teams displayed commendable performances in the quarterfinal matches of the World Junior Squash Championships.
