Himachal Pradesh CM Urges PM Modi’s Support for State’s Green Initiatives and Development Needs

New Delhi, July 16, 2024 : Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in New Delhi, where he presented the state’s ambitious plans to achieve complete sustainability as a green state. Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the state government’s initiatives aimed at transitioning entirely to green energy sources in the near future.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sukhu requested the Prime Minister’s support in securing adequate compensation to relieve the state from its obligations of purchasing thermal power. He emphasized the state’s commitment to promoting electric vehicles, seeking approval for RIDF loans under NABARD to finance electric buses.

Additionally, Chief Minister Sukhu discussed plans to harness 1000 MW of hybrid solar and wind energy in Spiti, utilizing the region’s abundant solar, wind, and hydro resources through a dedicated green corridor. He sought the Prime Minister’s backing for a major solar project in Spiti.

Addressing power-related issues, Chief Minister Sukhu raised concerns over pending arrears from Himachal Pradesh’s share in BBMB and urged for the restoration of rights and assets related to the Shanan Project. He also advocated for fair treatment regarding free power royalty in SJVN and NHPC power projects.

Chief Minister Sukhu informed Prime Minister Modi about Himachal Pradesh’s efforts to boost tourism, particularly in Kangra, which is being developed as the state’s tourism capital. He requested central assistance for expanding Kangra airport, proposing that the Centre cover 50 percent of land acquisition costs and provide a special grant for expansion. He further suggested establishing a Tourism SEZ to bolster tourism, generate employment, and stimulate economic growth.

The Chief Minister also briefed Prime Minister Modi on various developmental initiatives in Himachal Pradesh and requested substantial financial assistance to aid the state in recovering from severe losses incurred during recent monsoons.

Prime Minister Modi assured Chief Minister Sukhu of his careful consideration of the state’s requests and pledged all possible assistance.

Accompanying Chief Minister Sukhu during the meeting were Principal Secretary Finance Devesh Kumar, Secretary to Chief Minister Rakesh Kanwar, and Resident Commissioner Meera Mohanty.

The meeting underscored Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable development and its aspirations for enhanced cooperation with the central government in achieving these goals.
