Supreme Court Seeks Detailed Report on Encroachments Along Ganga
Centre asked to present comprehensive status on illegal constructions and steps taken to protect the river
The Impressive TimesNew Delhi, March 15: The Supreme Court of India has directed the Government of India to submit a detailed report on alleged encroachments along the banks of the Ganga River, expressing concern over the growing pressure on the river’s ecological and environmental balance.
A bench of the apex court sought comprehensive information regarding illegal constructions, land use changes and other activities taking place along the river’s floodplains. The court asked the Centre to clarify the steps taken by authorities to identify and remove encroachments.
During the hearing, the court emphasised the need to protect the river ecosystem and maintain the natural flow of the Ganga, which holds immense ecological, cultural and religious significance in the country.
The Centre has been asked to coordinate with concerned state governments and agencies to gather updated data on encroachments and submit a consolidated report before the court.
The matter is part of ongoing proceedings aimed at ensuring long-term conservation and sustainable management of the river and its surrounding environment.
