EAM Jaishankar Heads to Johannesburg for G20 Foreign Ministers Conference

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will embark on a two-day visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, starting today to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM). He is visiting at the invitation of South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.

The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration among the world’s largest economies. Dr. Jaishankar’s participation is expected to further strengthen India’s engagement with G20 member countries and amplify the voice of the Global South in addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and economic growth. Given India’s proactive role in promoting the interests of developing nations, Jaishankar is likely to advocate for a more inclusive and equitable global order.

During the meeting, ministers will deliberate on key global issues, including geopolitical tensions, food and energy security, climate resilience, and sustainable development. As a champion of multilateralism and global cooperation, India is expected to emphasize the importance of collective action in addressing these challenges. Dr. Jaishankar’s interventions will likely highlight India’s initiatives, including its focus on renewable energy, digital transformation, and economic resilience, which align with the G20’s priorities.

On the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Dr. Jaishankar is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other G20 nations. These discussions will provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties, explore new avenues for cooperation, and exchange views on regional and global developments. Notably, his interactions with key partners such as the United States, China, Russia, and European Union member states will be closely watched, given the evolving geopolitical landscape.

South Africa, as the current G20 chair, has placed a strong emphasis on promoting African interests within the G20 framework. India, which has consistently supported greater representation for developing countries in global governance institutions, is expected to align closely with South Africa’s priorities. Dr. Jaishankar’s visit underscores India’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with Africa and supporting the continent’s aspirations for sustainable development and economic growth.

As the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting concludes, the outcomes and key agreements are expected to shape the agenda for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit later this year.
