INDIA Bloc Leaders Protest at Jantar Mantar, Demand Release of Delhi CM Kejriwal

Accuse Centre of Suppressing Opposition Voices and Blame for Aspirant Deaths

New Delhi, July 30 2024 :  Leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday to demand the release of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, citing concerns over his declining health. The leaders also criticized the BJP-led Central government for allegedly “suppressing” opposition voices and blamed them for the deaths of three civil services aspirants at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar.

The protest saw slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “End dictatorship” echoing through the crowd. CPI (ML) Liberation leader Dipankar Bhattacharya accused the government of orchestrating a conspiracy against senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendar Jain, who have been jailed.

“The Modi government is responsible for anarchy in Delhi, which led to the deaths of three UPSC aspirants in Rajinder Nagar. The BJP is accountable for these deaths,” Bhattacharya declared at the rally.

Bhattacharya also highlighted that the government has attempted to undermine the AAP and weaken the Delhi administration, labeling the incarceration of the elected chief minister and other activists as part of a larger conspiracy. He cited cases such as the arrest of Umar Khalid and the alleged misuse of evidence in the Bhima Koregaon case, which resulted in Father Stan Swamy’s death in custody.

The BJP-led Centre, Bhattacharya claimed, is “trying to suppress the voice of those who oppose them.” He called for the people to deliver a “befitting reply” to the BJP in upcoming assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand.

AAP Delhi state convener Gopal Rai raised concerns over Kejriwal’s health, noting his declining sugar levels while in custody. “He was granted bail by the trial court and the Supreme Court, yet a conspiracy was hatched to keep him in jail,” Rai asserted. “Why does BJP want to imprison opposition leaders, and who is responsible for the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants?”

Rai accused the BJP of stripping the Delhi government of its powers while evading accountability for the aspirants’ deaths. The protest also saw participation from NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar and Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari expressed full support for AAP and Kejriwal on behalf of Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi. He criticized the BJP for Kejriwal’s arrest, calling it illegal and unconstitutional.

Gogoi warned the BJP that they could not intimidate the opposition. He claimed, “If fair Lok Sabha elections had been held this year, BJP would be in opposition, and we would be in power. The BJP-led government is not going to complete its five-year term.”

The Congress and AAP had previously formed an alliance for the recent Lok Sabha elections in Delhi but failed to secure any seats, with AAP contesting four seats and Congress three.
