New Delhi, July 24 2024 : Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, held a crucial meeting today with a delegation of farmers’ representatives from the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) at his office in Parliament. The focus of the discussion centered on the demand for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Following the meeting, Rahul Gandhi addressed reporters, emphasizing the Congress party’s commitment to implementing a legal guarantee for MSP, as outlined in their manifesto. He expressed confidence in its feasibility and announced plans to engage with leaders of the INDIA bloc to exert pressure on the government to enact this provision for the benefit of farmers.
The farmers’ delegation, comprising leaders from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, conveyed their concerns on the MSP issue during the meeting. Rahul Gandhi assured them of his intention to discuss the matter with leaders of the INDIA alliance to advance their shared objectives.
The meeting was attended by several Congress MPs, including KC Venugopal, Raja Brar, Jairam Ramesh, Charnajeet Singh Channi, and Deepender Singh Hooda, underscoring the party’s support for the farmers’ demands.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had criticized the denial of permission for farmer leaders seeking to meet him inside Parliament premises, alleging arbitrary restrictions. Subsequently, permission was granted for their entry.
The discussions come shortly after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s presentation of the Union Budget, reflecting ongoing tensions and negotiations between the government and agricultural stakeholders regarding MSP guarantees.
